Manifesto of La Ligne Fine – Institut

The precision of the content, the audacity of the form

  1. An era that overflows, a gaze that rests

We live in a time where everything speaks at the same time: news channels, social networks, opinion pieces, « decryptions », threads and hot reactions. Serious subjects circulate there, of course, but often wrung out, flattened, reduced to a few formulas that reassure more than they enlighten.

Meanwhile, the world is moving its own way: recomposition of powers, energy tensions, the digital revolution, democratic fragilities, changes in work, profound transformations of our health systems and our environments.

Between the seriousness of what is at stake and the lightness of the way in which it is talked about, a space opens up.

It is in this space that La Ligne Fine – Institut intends to take place: a place where we take the time to understand, before pretending to conclude.

  • Our intuition

At the origin of La Ligne Fine – Institut, there is a simple intuition: We are not short of points of view. We lack frameworks to think about.

We are not looking to add another voice to the general concert, but to propose a way of working :

  • place events in the long term,
  • articulate the international, political, social, technological, environmental dimensions,
  • And never lose sight of this question: what does this change, concretely, for our ability to act?
  • What we want to do

La Ligne Fine – Institut is an analysis workshop : a place where we write, where we map, where we debate, but with a constant concern for clarity.

We want to:

  • Shedding light on questions of sovereignty: Not as a slogan, but as a common thread: who depends on whom, for what, and with what consequences?
  • To give depth to the democratic debate: By proposing worked, sourced texts that assume a perspective without being reduced to a posture.
  • Forging links between disciplines: Because defence cannot be understood without the economy, health without social issues, energy without geopolitics, digital technology without law and freedoms.

Our ambition is modest and demanding at the same time:  to offer tools for understanding, rather than instantaneous reactions.

  • Our five poles: a working map

In order not to disperse, our work is organized around five thematic poles, which are as many gateways to reality:

  • International Relations, Defence and Security

Conflicts, alliances, balances of power, military and diplomatic strategies.

  • Politics, Economics and Democracy

Institutions, regime transformations, social dynamics, economic models.

  • Health, Society and Inclusion

Health systems, territorial inequalities, social vulnerabilities, cohesion.

  • Technologies, innovations and digital technology

Infrastructure, data, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, regulations.

  • Energy, Environment and Sustainable Development

Energy mix, critical resources, climate adaptation, food security.

These poles are not watertight boxes: they are lines of force that intersect, respond to each other, feed each other.

  • Our formats: taking stock of things

To make this work readable, we have chosen clearly identified formats:

  •  strategic notes, to make a diagnosis and scenarios on a specific subject;
  • from the tribunes, to enter the public conversation with an assumed voice;
  •  confidential memos and notes, to provide more detailed support for certain actors;
  •  maps and indicators, to show phenomena that otherwise remain abstract;
  •  Long files, which take the time to follow a thread to the end.

Each format has its own purpose, its size, its tone. The whole draws, over time, a working landscape : a library under construction.

  • An Institute linked to a publishing house

La Ligne Fine – Institut is not isolated: it is part of a larger project, La Ligne Fine – Éditions, which will publish in-depth essays. Short texts, notes, maps, and files feed the books.

Books, in turn, give depth and coherence to everyday analyses.

Thus, beyond current events, a corpus is gradually being built  : not a simple flow of content, but a collective work that unfolds over time.

  • Who we talk to

We write for all those who, in different capacities, bear a share of responsibility or curiosity in the conduct of the common world:

  • public officials and elected officials,
  • administrations, institutions, practitioners in the field,
  • journalists, analysts, researchers,
  • students,
  • citizens who wish to have structured texts to feed their judgment.

We don’t promise definitive answers. We propose argued paths, reading grids, hypotheses.

It is then up to each of us to take hold of them, to discuss them, to contradict them if necessary.

  • A style: serious without heaviness

We are committed to these two requirements:

  • on the side of the content: accuracy, sources, nuance, construction ;
  • On the side of the form: legible sentences, lively tone, sometimes a little impertinent, never casual.

Our motto – « Precision of content, audacity of form » – sums up this choice:

a language that insults neither the reader’s intelligence nor his time.

  • An invitation

The Ligne Fine – Institut is an open construction site. It will be built with those who agree to take part in this adventure: writing, proofreading, debating, proposing subjects, confronting points of view, sharing knowledge.

Joining the Institute does not mean adhering to a dogma. It is choosing to take seriously what we are experiencing, and to work on it with method, patience and clarity.

We don’t promise a simpler world. We hope, however, to help make it a little more understandable – and, perhaps, a little more habitable.
